No car owner wants to hear that the problem the car is having is in the transmission. Transmissions are one of the most expensive parts that a car owner might have to replace – if the car is old enough, it sometimes makes more sense to replace the car entirely than to replace the transmission. But I’ve found that there are ways to save when you need transmission work! Not only are there ways to save money on a new or rebuilt transmission, there are also ways to locate transmission problems and have them fixed before they become too serious. This blog is designed to help you take better care of your transmission, and avoid paying too much for transmission repairs.
Take a ride in your pick of vehicles and you may not quite appreciate the suspension system until something is out of whack. The modern vehicle suspension system has been in existence since 1922 when it was first implemented on Lancia Lambda, but soon after became a common staple on the majority of vehicles on the market. This independent suspension system, with the same basic still in use today, allows for each wheel to rotate on its own and has its own support system made up of springs, shocks, and struts.
Becoming familiar with common problems and their causes will make a huge difference when it comes to suspension repair.
Problem: Over-exaggerated movement when going around curves or over bumps.
Cause: When you go over uneven surfaces and your vehicle bounces and moves like it is standing on highly flexible springs, there is a good chance certain components of your suspension system are starting to go bad. This is typically caused by shocks or springs that are far too flexible than they should be from overuse and wear.
If your vehicle has a lot of miles, shock or spring suspension repair is almost inevitable because of this problem.
Problem: Car rides lower directly over one specific tire or wheel.
Cause: If you have an issue with your car not sitting evenly, you can pretty much guarantee this is related to the suspension system. This may cause a car to droop at the rear end or slit slightly to one side. Without immediate attention, not only will you notice a rough ride, but extra wear and tear on your tires The shock of one or more of your wheel is the likely culprit in this scenario and will have to be replaced.
Problem: Loud squeaking and screeching when traveling or climbing in or out of your car.
Cause: Even though this sound can also be caused by wheel joints and bearings, this is also a sign that the shocks and struts are getting worn out. You can lubricate them well to mask the problem, but this will only be a short-term fix. If you are hearing these loud noises, it is best to stop by a suspension repair shop for advice.
