No car owner wants to hear that the problem the car is having is in the transmission. Transmissions are one of the most expensive parts that a car owner might have to replace – if the car is old enough, it sometimes makes more sense to replace the car entirely than to replace the transmission. But I’ve found that there are ways to save when you need transmission work! Not only are there ways to save money on a new or rebuilt transmission, there are also ways to locate transmission problems and have them fixed before they become too serious. This blog is designed to help you take better care of your transmission, and avoid paying too much for transmission repairs.
Some people enjoy having a diesel engine in their car because it provides more horsepower compared to a standard fuel engine. It gives them the ability to tow things that are very heavy such as trailers and boats, and can be fuel-efficient as well. Here are a few things to consider that will keep your car's diesel engine working great.
Avoid Revving A Cold Engine
Since diesel engines are powerful, you may be tempted to rev your engine to warm it up before heading out onto the road. Doing this when the engine is cold can actually be very bad for it. When fuel is cold the fluid can be much thicker than normal, and it won't flow smoothly like it does when it is warm. This will cause unnecessary wear on a diesel engine.
You are better off waiting a couple minutes while your engine warms up, allowing the oil and fuel start flowing naturally.
Maintain Proper Coolant Levels
A diesel engine has a high compression rate compared to a standard fuel engine, which causes a diesel engine to produce much more heat. That's why it is so important to frequently check the coolant levels in your car, and add more coolant if it is low.
Running your car with low coolant will cause your car's radiator to work harder than normal. If the radiator cannot keep up, it may cause your engine to break down due to running too hot.
Replace Filters Often
Since your diesel engine operates at a higher temperature it will easily hold impurities and sediment. Keeping your car's filters clean will help maintain the engine and avoid an unnecessary auto repair. Fuel, oil, and air filters should be changed if there is any sign of debris in them, which will happen much more often when compared to a standard fuel engine.
Inspect all your filters when you have your oil changed, and prepare for frequent filter changes.
Allow Fluids To Cool Before They Are Drained
When changing the oil or performing maintenance work, you should allow the fluids to cool down completely before you drain them. Doing so will prevent debris and sediment from running through the engine. If having your oil changed at an auto shop, consider waiting in their parking lot with the engine off for a little bit before you have the car worked on.
If you follow these 4 tips it will help prevent unnecessary wear and tear from happening to your diesel engine.
